Question...
"In your experience, is the installation of the tamper alarm system (electrical conduit etc.) on a post indicator valve usually performed as part of the standard installation of the PIV itself, or are separate plans and contractor provided. In addition, when you have an above ground rising stem OS & Y valve, isn't the PIV an unnecessary redundancy? "

All valves controlling the fire protection water supply must be monitored with a tamper switch or
(if approved by the Fire Marshal and Owner's Underwriter) locked to prevent unauthorized closure. To be safe, you should specify a PIV with the tamper switch option and coordinate with the electrical engineer or contractor to provide wiring. The fire protection contractor may automatically provide the tamper switch since he is ultimately responsible for the system design, but if you are preparing the bid documents, you are responsible for making sure that the electrical documents indicate where wiring is required for all components of the fire protection system. Exterior free-standing post indicator valves are not necessarily required in every installation. Some local authorities allow a PIV that extends through the building exterior wall at the water supply entrance. Some local authorities do not require a PIV at all if there is an indicating type valve on the main riser within the building where the supply enters, provided there is a door allowing access from the exterior of the building. NFPA leaves this and many other requirements up to the Local Authority having jurisdiction. I have found that it is necessary to contact the local fire marshal to verify particular requirements. This doesn't take much time and can prevent change orders.
