Question...
"4 story hotel project. Better to route hot water at first floor
and recirc. at third floor? Recirc at third floor would then have many
recirc tie-ins for the risers and have balancing valves. Can I expect
problems with trying to balance the system?
Maybe it would be best to route hot at second floor and recirc. the hot
water main?
"

A good arrangement for four levels of stacked fixtures (assuming that guest
rooms are located on the first level) would be routing main(s) at the third
floor ceiling, feeding the third and fourth floor fixtures and providing
main(s) at the first floor ceiling, feeding the first and second floor
fixtures. This will make balancing less complex compared to feeding all
upper levels from the first floor. The first floor may also require a
separate loop to serve fixtures located only on the first level which are
not stacked on upper levels.
Also, I recommend providing accessible automatic flow control valve
assemblies in lieu of manual "balancing" valves, allowing you to precisely
control the flow from each loop. They will also allow you to size the
recirculation pump based upon actual design flow. Griswold is a good
manufacturer of these valves... http://www.griswoldcontrols.com/
NOTE: You should also determine the way valving of the guest rooms will be
arranged. Some owners want each guest room to be valved separately.
